• Membrane: TPO stands for thermoplastic polyolefin, and it goes down in large sheets that form one waterproof layer.
• Welded seams: Where two sheets overlap, crews weld the edges together with heat to close the seam. A weak weld can open over time, so seam quality matters on every TPO roof.
• Attachment: The membrane stays secured to the roof below, and the method depends on the building and its design.
• Layers beneath: The deck is the structural surface under the membrane, with any specified boards in between. A new membrane cannot correct wet or damaged layers underneath it.
• Flashing: Flashing is the added material that seals the roof at walls, curbs, pipes, drains and edges. These joints are a common source of leaks, so they deserve as much care as the flat areas.
